An unidentified floating object is picked up on the sonar of a US nuclear submarine, and the ensuing panic leads to the sub being marooned on the edge of an abyss. Oil rigger Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) leads his team on a rescue mission, aided by engineer Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), Bud's estranged wife.
